While Samsung Electronics Co. relies on the Android platform for most of its devices, the company has big hopes for its own OS, Tizen. They recently released the Samsung Z3 which will be the second smartphone to operate on Tizen.
Haven’t heard of or used Tizen? That’s because Samsung is focusing on releasing it in emerging markets, specifically India. Samsung has, however, released their wearable, the Gear S2, with the Tizen operating system here in the U.S.
The Samsung Z3 is designed specifically for the market in India and certainly won’t be a competitor to the Android and Apple operating systems that dominate here in the U.S. Let’s have a look at the spec sheet anyways:
- 3 GHz quad-core processor
- 1 GB of RAM
- 8 GB of expandable storage
- 5-inch 720p display
- 8 and 5 MP cameras
As we mentioned, this spec sheet pales in comparison to the dominant phones and operating systems on the market. However, it is a step up from the Samsung Z1— their first experiment with the Tizen OS.
Time will tell if the Tizen platform will ever make its way into bigger markets. As of now, third-party app developers are hesitant to jump on board, which is a major hurdle. The first step for Samsung and Tizen is to achieve success competing with Microsoft and Blackberry in emerging markets around the world.
