If there’s one thing to miss about the ancient “flip-phones” it has to be the battery life. Those things could last for days!
Unfortunately, with improved technology and features – the battery life on a smartphone doesn’t last nearly as long as it should. What you may not know is that there are a few effective ways to conserve that precious battery life.
Most of them involve turning off certain features. While turning off these great features kind of defeats the purpose of having a smartphone, it’s nice to know that when you need to save more juice, you can. Here are the top 5 battery saving tips for your iPhone:
1. Turn the Brightness Down
This is number one because it’s the most simple and doesn’t really change the effectiveness of your phone (unless it’s so low that you literally can’t see the screen).
How to reduce screen brightness:
- Go to Settings
- Display & Brightness
- Move the slider to desired brightness
Having the auto-brightness on actually helps the battery life as well because your phone will adjust automatically based on the light around you.
2. Use Airplane Mode when you can
Airplane mode is great because it turns off all the battery drainers at once – Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, Cellular Data, and Personal Hotspot. You can also turn each of these on or off individually.
While Airplane Mode tremendously restricts what you can do on your smartphone, it’s great if you’re trying to save battery over a long period of time and have no charger access. For example, if you’re at a concert or sporting event and just want to use your phone for pictures and video, Airplane Mode is the perfect solution.
To turn on Airplane Mode:
- Go to Settings
- Swipe Airplane Mode to On
3. Prevent Background App Refresh
If you have iOS 7, one of the new features is Background App Refresh. This determines which apps you use most often and when and updates them automatically. While it’s a nice feature to have, it drains your battery life. Turn it off completely or just select which apps you want to use it with.
To turn off Background App Refresh:
- Go to Settings
- Go to General
- Go to Background App Refresh
- Select to disable entirely or for specific apps
4. Turn off Location Services
Location services are extremely handy when traveling or trying to use the iPhone’s built-in GPS. However, when you’re not looking for directions, restaurants, etc., turn this feature off to save some power.
To turn off Location Services:
- Go to Settings
- Go to Privacy
- Click Location Services
- Swipe to Off
5. Keep Track of Usage
Did you know that you can see which specific apps drain your phone’s battery the most? If you have iOS 8, Apple now lets you find and discover the apps that are killing your battery. This way, you can determine for yourself which apps are using up your battery life. It may just be the ones you use the most.
To access Battery Usage:
- Go to Settings
- Go to General
- Click Usage
- Click Battery Usage
